W.H Davis Wagon Services

Industrial photography is about finding beauty and precision in engineering, capturing the power, rhythm, and expertise behind large-scale operations. My recent assignment at W.H. Davis Wagon Services’ facility in Ferrybridge perfectly embodied that challenge. Combining industrial photography and drone videography to document one of the UK’s leading centres for rail freight wagon maintenance. I set out to document the meticulous work that goes into maintaining and servicing rail freight wagons.

W.H. Davis is one of the UK’s leading names in rail freight engineering, known for their craftsmanship and technical excellence. At their Ferrybridge site, skilled teams inspect, repair, and service a wide range of wagons .

From a visual perspective, the site offers a fascinating blend of industrial structure and human precision, the geometry of rail lines, and the detail in every tool and weld presented endless photographic opportunities. My goal was to capture not just the machinery, but the people and processes that keep it all running.

I combined high-resolution still photography with drone video. I focused on close-up shots of wagon maintenance, component inspections, and workshop activity, highlighting craftsmanship, materials, and textures. Low-angle compositions and selective depth of field brought attention to both people and detail.

The aerial perspective revealed the full scale of operations; the movement of wagons in and out of the yard, the spatial layout of the workshop, and the impressive infrastructure surrounding the site. I captured sweeping establishing shots and smooth motion sequences for corporate presentations, marketing materials, and digital media.

Industrial sites like Ferrybridge come with specific challenges, from weather conditions and safety protocols to working around active rail operations. Before the shoot, I carried out a full site risk assessment and coordinated with the W.H. Davis team to ensure all photography and drone work complied with safety standards and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) drone regulations.
