Architectural Photography at 101 Old Street, Liverpool

CLIENT: Mountain Earth

As an architectural and commercial photographer, I enjoy capturing the transformation of existing buildings and showcasing the quality of work that goes into bringing commercial spaces up to modern standards. My latest project involved photographing two newly refurbished floors at 101 Old Street in Liverpool for contractor Mountain Earth.

At Matthew Nichol Photography, I work with contractors, construction companies and property professionals to create high-quality photography that documents completed projects and communicates the standard of their work. This project provided an opportunity to capture the finished office interiors, highlighting the results of the refurbishment and creating a professional visual record for Mountain Earth.

Commercial refurbishment photography is about more than documenting a finished space. It is about showing how a building has been improved, capturing the details that demonstrate quality and producing imagery that contractors can use across their websites, project portfolios and marketing materials.

Capturing Commercial Refurbishment and Fit-Out Work

Commercial refurbishment projects require coordination between different trades, careful planning and attention to detail. The final photographs provide an opportunity to show the outcome of that work in a clear and engaging way.

For this project, my focus was on presenting the two refurbished floors professionally and accurately. I look for compositions that make the most of the available space, using architectural lines, perspective and carefully controlled framing to create images that feel open and well balanced.

Wide-angle photography is particularly useful for commercial interiors because it can communicate the relationship between different parts of a floor. However, it is important to maintain natural proportions and avoid excessive distortion, especially when photographing rooms, corridors and office layouts.

I also pay attention to the smaller details that contribute to the overall impression of a completed refurbishment. Finishes, fixtures, lighting and the junctions between different materials can all help tell the story of the work undertaken.

By combining overall views with carefully selected details, I can create a varied set of photographs that communicates both the finished spaces and the quality of the work.

The Importance of Lighting in Architectural Photography

Lighting is one of the most important elements of commercial interior photography. It influences how a space feels, how finishes appear and how clearly architectural details can be seen.

When photographing refurbished office floors, I carefully consider the balance between natural light from windows and the artificial lighting within the building. Mixed lighting conditions can create challenges, particularly when daylight and interior lights have different colour temperatures.

My aim is to produce photographs that represent the space naturally while retaining the atmosphere of the finished interior. Careful exposure, composition and colour control help ensure that the photographs remain consistent across the project.

I also consider the time of day and how the available light affects different areas of the floor. Where possible, I work with the conditions to produce clean, balanced images that highlight the architecture and finishes without distracting from the overall design.

The result is a set of photographs that helps potential clients appreciate the completed environment and gives Mountain Earth professional imagery for its project portfolio.
